The Bass GuitarThe electric bass looks like a regular guitar apart from the longer neck, the slightly larger body and the absence of (one or) two strings. Because of the longer neck it has a longer scale length and the four strings usually have the same tuning as the double bass. The base line gives the music its beat and delivers the framework that holds everything together, harmonically.Paul Tutmarc was the guy who invented the bass guitar but the public wasn't ready for it. A few years later Leo Fender improved the concept and as you know, he did get successful. Read more about it on our bass guitar history page. For those who think playing the bass looks easy and is not as rewarding as playing regular guitar, you may want to reconsider. The bassist needs more focus and perseverance to play the sometimes monotone base lines throughout the entire song or performance. Try it yourself. A good place to start are these bass guitar scales. The tuning of a standard four stringed bass can be explained in 'Chinese': Tune in fourths such that the open highest string, G, is an eleventh (an octave and a fourth) below middle C, making the tuning of all four strings the same as that of the double bass...) In plain English it goes like this: Tune it like the lower four strings of a 6 string guitar, only one octave lower! Comments? Suggestions? Use the feedback page and let me know.
